Funding & Coverage
When you're working with a case manager or funding program, Western Health Care can work with them to help identify suitable equipment options for your needs. Our goal is to make the equipment process easier and help you get the right mobility, accessibility, or home health care equipment.

Program Directory
Explore the programs below to learn about available funding options, eligibility requirements, coverage details, and how to apply directly through the appropriate government program.
Provincial funding for Alberta residents. These are the programs Calgary and Red Deer families use most, and the ones we prepare paperwork for most often.
Alberta Aids to Daily Living
Who it's for
Albertans with a long-term disability, chronic illness, or terminal illness.
What it covers
Hospital beds, manual and power wheelchairs, walkers, bathroom safety equipment, patient lifts, and pressure-relief mattresses. AADL pays a share of the benefit cost; a client cost-share applies, is capped annually, and is waived for low-income Albertans and AISH recipients.
How to apply
An AADL-authorized assessor — often an occupational therapist or a qualified vendor specialist — completes the assessment and submits the authorization on your behalf.
Residential Access Modification Program
Who it's for
Lower-income Alberta homeowners and renters who use a wheelchair and need their home modified for access.
What it covers
Wheelchair ramps, porch and vertical platform lifts, stairlifts, widened doorways, and barrier-free bathroom modifications. Awarded as a grant toward eligible modifications, subject to income testing and lifetime maximums.
How to apply
Apply directly to the program with supporting medical documentation and contractor quotes. We provide the itemized quotes RAMP requires.
Seniors Home Adaptation and Repair Program
Who it's for
Alberta homeowners aged 65+ who meet the income and home-equity criteria.
What it covers
A low-interest home equity loan toward accessibility adaptations, safety repairs, and renovations that help seniors stay in their own homes — including bathroom modifications, ramps, and lifts. Repaid when the home is sold or transferred.
How to apply
Apply through Alberta Seniors and Housing. SHARP is often paired with RAMP to cover a larger project.
Workers Compensation Board – Alberta
Who it's for
Workers injured on the job in Alberta with an accepted claim.
What it covers
Mobility equipment, home and vehicle modifications, bathroom safety equipment, and ongoing maintenance related to the workplace injury. We bill WCB directly against your claim number.
How to apply
Your WCB case manager authorizes equipment. Give us your claim number and we coordinate from there.
Alberta Health Services
Who it's for
Patients referred through AHS home care, community rehabilitation, or specialty programs in the Calgary and Central zones.
What it covers
Compression garments for qualifying lymphedema patients, plus equipment coordinated through AHS home care and rehabilitation teams.
How to apply
Referrals come through your AHS care team. We work with both Calgary Zone and Central Zone coordinators.
Canada-wide programs available to Alberta residents regardless of provincial coverage.
VAC — Veterans Independence Program & Treatment Benefits
Who it's for
Canadian Armed Forces veterans and eligible RCMP members.
What it covers
Coverage for mobility equipment, stairlifts, porch lifts, ramps, bathroom modifications, and home adaptations that support independent living.
How to apply
Coverage is arranged through your VAC case manager or the federal programs administrator.
Non-Insured Health Benefits (First Nations & Inuit)
Who it's for
Registered First Nations and recognized Inuit clients.
What it covers
Medical equipment and supplies including mobility aids, bathroom safety equipment, and compression garments, subject to NIHB benefit criteria and prior approval.
How to apply
Most items require prior approval with a prescription. We prepare the quote and supporting documentation.
HATC — federal non-refundable tax credit
Who it's for
Seniors aged 65+ and people eligible for the Disability Tax Credit, plus qualifying supporting family members.
What it covers
Eligible renovation expenses that improve accessibility or reduce the risk of harm — grab bars, walk-in tubs, barrier-free showers, ramps, stairlifts, and widened doorways. Claimed on your annual return.
How to apply
Keep your itemized invoices. We break quotes down by line item so the eligible portion is easy to identify at tax time.
METC — federal and Alberta medical expense credits
Who it's for
Anyone with eligible out-of-pocket medical expenses, including equipment purchases.
What it covers
Many mobility aids, lifts, and prescribed home modifications qualify as eligible medical expenses, and can often be claimed alongside the Home Accessibility Tax Credit for the same project.
How to apply
Retain receipts and any prescribing documentation from your practitioner.
National charities and disease-specific organizations that loan or fund equipment for Albertans.
Extended health plans and direct-pay options. We direct-bill wherever the insurer allows it, so you are not fronting the cost and waiting on reimbursement.
Who it's for
Anyone with employer or private extended health coverage.
What it covers
Compression garments, mobility aids, and durable medical equipment. We direct-bill Alberta Blue Cross, Sun Life, Manulife, GreenShield, Canada Life, Desjardins, and Equitable Life — ask about yours, we can usually arrange it.
Who it's for
Anyone whose funding approval is still in progress.
What it covers
Weekly and monthly rentals so nobody waits unsafely at home for paperwork. Where a program allows it, we credit rental costs toward the purchase once approval comes through.
Who it's for
Anyone without coverage, or for items a program does not fund.
What it covers
Cash, debit, and all major credit cards. Itemized quotes up front — no surprise line items, and no charge for the in-home assessment.
Program details change. Everything here is a plain-English summary for orientation only — eligibility, coverage amounts, and final approval are determined solely by the applicable funding organization or its designated authorizer, not by Western Health Care. Always confirm current criteria with the program directly.
